What is ADSL?

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is part of a large family of telecommunication technologies generally referred to as xDSL. ADSL is an evolving high speed transmission technology that uses existing phone company telephone lines from the phone company's central office to the customer's premises and requires that the customer have a special ADSL modem at his/her premises. ADSL sends high speed digital signals up and down these phone lines and sends more information one way than the other - hence the use of the word asymmetric in the name.

ADSL transmission speed rates start at 256 kbps download and 64kbps up load and, at present, top out at T-1 speeds. Performance at these incredible transmission rates is subject to the condition of the individual twisted-pair lines that terminate at each customer's location as well as the distance from the central office to the customer's location. Generally ADSL can not be effectively provided at distances greater than 18,000 feet from the phone company's switching station office.

The upload capabilities of ADSL are through bi-directional (duplex) channels. These channels include the regular phone line channel and an optional channel that may be used for purposes which include data transmission and videoconferencing. The phone channel is split off from the digital ADSL modem by filters ensuring that the phone service will continue to function in the event that an ADSL device failure.

Because ADSL uses frequencies higher than those used on your existing phone service it does not interfere with your normal voice telephone conversations. This means that a user of ADSL can surf the internet and talk on the phone at the same time - using the same phone line. Although theoretically ADSL is 50 times faster than a typical 56k v.90 modem, actual connection speeds will vary from customer to customer.

Initial ADSL field trials and business cases have focused on ADSL's potential for Video on Demand service and other entertainment services. ADSL, however, offers a wide range of other applications, including education and healthcare. Once Telcos are able to deliver megabits to the home it is expected that an explosion of applications will occur, including work-at-home access to corporate LANs, interactive services such as home shopping and home banking and even multi-party video gaming, interactive travelogues, and remote medical diagnosis.

GTE is now providing ADSL service to the Princeville and Lihu`e area on Kauai. If your phone number starts with 826, 241, 245 and 246, HPN can provide you with ADSL service! Hawaii Pacific Networks, Inc. supports ADSL and suggests that interested parties contact GTE to inquire about its installation in their area. GTE has indicated that if it receives sufficient demand it will provide ADSL to the area of demand.

*** Attention ***

GTE is accepting requests for ADSL on island. We need as many persons in each area of the island to send us e-mail on this. Please visit our ADSL Petition section on this page.

WEBMAIL

What is it?

Web Mail is software that allows you to receive e-mail in any POP3 e-mail account you have access to. If you are traveling and have access to a PC or Mac that is connected to the Internet you can receive your local e-mail by using WebMail.

You can send e-mail from anywhere in the world using WebMail and your message will appear to have been sent from your local e-mail address.

WebMail, is a POP3/SMTP email CGI client continually active on our web server.

How do I access it?

You may access it in the future by typing http://mail.midpac.net in the address bar. You can click here to access it now.

Advantage of WebMail

  • Works anywhere. As long as you can access a web server using a browser, you can use WebMail. No need to have direct TCP/IP access, works through a proxy, even a firewall.
  • WebMail can access any e-mail account you have. It's great if you have multiple email accounts on different POP3 servers.
  • WebMail can send e-mail to anyone using any of your email accounts, including attachments.
  • Easy to use. No setup. Just enter an e-mail address of your POP3 account. You can access multiple accounts at the same time, just popup another browser window, and go the URL for the CGI program.
  • WebMail is fast. because most of the work is done on the web server, which always has a fast internet connection and fast CPU.

How it works.

WebMail is installed on our web server as a CGI program that communicates with POP3 servers throughout the world. It retrieves e-mail, communicates with SMTP servers and sends e-mail. On reading email, the CGI program retrieves mail from the sending POP3 server, decodes and returns it to your browser. In sending mail, the CGI takes your message and connects directly to the SMTP server. In forwarding, webmail retrieves mail from the POP3 server and sends it to our SMTP server. Since mail retrieval and delivery are performed on the web server (which has a fast Internet connection), WebMail is very fast.

Is WebMail efficient?

Yes, it uses very efficient algorithms in parsing the mail messages, which is the key to performance. A highly optimized MIME parsing algorithm was written by the creators of WebMail, which outperforms other modules we tested by a wide margin.

Does the CGI save my password on the WEB server?

No!

After your initial login, your e-mail password is never saved on the web server, instead it is saved as a temporary cookie inside your browser. This cookie is destroyed when you exit your browser or select the logout link.
